Manos Hadjidakis, Jules Dassin, Giorgos Zambetas: all together, with the famous superstar Melina Merkouri as leading actress, made Piraeus famous all around the world in 1960 with the film "Never on Sunday" and the song "Children of Piraeus”,for which M.Hatzidakis was awarded an Oscar in April 17, 1961. No other Greek song could overcome its success and there are countless interpretations in many languages!
PLOT. An American writer (Jules Dassin), travelling to Greece, meets a disorderly Greek prostitute (Melina Merkouri) and is fascinated by her personality. He tries to convey his knowledge to her and bring her close to what he considers civilized, but eventually she will teach him the most important lesson about life and the joy that can be in store for us. The script was also written by Jules Dassin and Melina's costars were Giorgos Fountas, Titos Vandis, Dimitris Papamichael, Thanasis Vengos, Alexis Solomos etc. The film was nominated for five Oscars, including those for Best Actress, Director and Screenplay. It won a Golden Globe in 1961 and Melina Merkouri was awarded a Prize at the Cannes Festival of 1960.
